Myst Patch 2.0 Upgrades Engine to Unreal Engine 5 and Overhauls UI
Myst version 2.0 migrates the game to Unreal Engine 5.3.2, introduces Metal 3 and hardware ray tracing support for M3 and M4 Macs, and refreshes the user interface. The update also drops official support for older VR headsets while updating Windows minimum requirements to DirectX 12.
Cyan Worlds has released version 2.0 for Myst, shifting the three-year-old remake from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5.3.2. The update brings technical changes across platforms, including modernized rendering pipelines, updated supersampling defaults, and a redesigned menu system.
Engine and Platform Requirements
The migration to Unreal Engine 5.3.2 resolves platform stability issues and reduces shader compilation hitches. On Windows, DirectX 12 is now required. On macOS, the minimum requirement increases to macOS 14.5, and Metal 3 support is enabled for M3 family chips. VR support now runs through OpenXR, replacing the multi-launch configuration with a single entry point. Official support has ended for original Rift, Quest 1 via Quest Link, original Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets like the HP Reverb 2.
Visuals and Ray Tracing
Texture flickering on lower-end hardware is fixed, alongside adjustments to lighting and reflections. Windows continues to feature ray-traced reflections, while Macs with M3 and M4 chips gain hardware-accelerated ray tracing support. HDR support is improved across all platforms, fixing startup crashes on OLED Steam Decks.
Interface and Supersampling
The user interface receives a visual refresh modeled after the Riven remake. The default cursor is now a hand icon, and the settings menu clarifies applied versus automatic settings. A new Help sub-menu includes a Teleport to Safe Spot option. Supersampling options are updated, setting DLSS as the default on compatible Windows hardware and MetalFX as the default on Mac.
General and VR Bug Fixes
A Polish translation error for a Selenitic Age clue is corrected. Audio persistence for saving and loading near playing music is improved, and AirPods startup crashes on Mac are resolved. VR-specific fixes address player height changes during teleports, thumbstick movement spam, and menu visibility on SteamVR.
Why this patch matters
Patch 2.0 updates Myst for current hardware by shifting to Unreal Engine 5 and dropping older APIs and legacy VR headsets.
