Valheim Public Test Patch 0.220.1 Cuts Start-Up Times and Memory Usage
Valheim Public Test Patch 0.220.1 introduces performance optimizations, cutting asset bundle start-up times by up to 75 percent and reducing memory usage. The update also fixes a memory leak tied to generating new worlds, tweaks build piece snap points, and rolls out Xbox improvements.
Valheim Patch 0.220.1 is live on the Public Test branch, bringing technical optimizations alongside build piece adjustments and bug fixes. Because this update sits on the testing branch, players must opt in manually through Steam.
Performance and Memory Optimizations
Optimized asset bundles reduce game start-up times by up to 75 percent, shrink build size by up to 35 percent, and lower memory usage by 110 MB. UI rendering optimizations boost frame rates by 5 to 10 percent when players are CPU-bound. A memory leak occurring during the generation of subsequent new worlds has been fixed, and loading certain sound files in the background reduces specific lag spikes.
Build Pieces and Gameplay Tweaks
Ashwood Stakewalls and Grausten wall 2x2 pieces receive snap point adjustments for better alignment. Grausten arches can now be placed in different orientations within the same position, Grausten Roof Corners no longer shift when damaged, and Black Marble floor triangles and tips are no longer burnable. The Asksvin trophy icon color matches the actual trophy, and cooked Asksvin Tail and Roasted Crust Pie no longer sparkle on item stands. Detailed particle systems have been removed from graphics settings and defaulted to off.
Multiplayer and Xbox Improvements
Multiplayer area-of-effect collision detection is more accurate, stopping unintended fire damage when walking near flames. Cross-network users now see in-game player names correctly in the player list, and profile picture memory usage has dropped. On Xbox, profile updates appear without restarting, an invite button joins the pause menu, and reserved console space decreases by up to 1 GiB. Text communication and user-generated content restrictions enforce system safety privileges across platforms.
Why this patch matters
Patch 0.220.1 focuses on technical housekeeping, providing loading and memory improvements while cleaning up construction mechanics.
