Rust World Update 2.0 Brings Back Radtown and Overhauls Terrain

Rust's massive World Update 2.0 overhaul introduces the returning Radtown monument, completely reworked cliffs and rock formations, procedural canyons, lakes, and oases, plus a new Tier 2 High Caliber Revolver and hazardous radioactive water mechanics.

Facepunch Studios has launched World Update 2.0 for Rust, delivering a massive overhaul to procedural generation alongside classic content callbacks, new weaponry, and toxic tactical liquids. The patch completely replaces existing cliffs and large rock formations while introducing distinct biomes like canyons, lakes, and oases to every map.

Terrain, Cliffs, and Monuments

All cliffs and large rock formations in the game have been rebuilt from scratch. The update introduces tall coastal cliffs meant for scaling via rocky ledges and sloped inland cliffs designed for running up hills. Fan-favorite legacy formations such as god rock, anvil rock, and arch rock return alongside new offshore rock spawns that open up fresh base-building spots. Procedurally generated maps now feature unique canyons, lakes, and oases. Canyons offer narrow paths for ambushes, lakes provide fishing and gathering space at the cost of open-water exposure, and oases act as high-competition green zones in the desert. Additionally, the legacy Radtown monument makes its return with a refreshed layout, preserving original proportions while improving movement flow and cover.

Weapons, Tools, and Gear

Survivors gain access to the High Caliber Revolver, a handcrafted, single-action Tier 2 weapon that chambers 5.56 ammunition. It rewards precise, long-range shooting with high power and accuracy rather than rapid fire. Wood gathering gets an early-game boost with the return of legacy wood piles in snow and temperate biomes, which function like ore nodes and can be harvested with a rock, hatchet, or chainsaw. For underwater exploration, players can now craft the Diver Propulsion Vehicle, a handheld device that speeds up aquatic travel and can be stored in inventory. Ocean surface markers have been replaced by more visible solid buoys, and dive sites have been refreshed with three new layouts containing equal loot distributions. The permanent store also receives the Frontiersman Pack, featuring the Frontier Hazmat Suit skin, a Blunderbuss shotgun skin, and a tomahawk-inspired hatchet skin.

Radioactive Water and Water Wells

Water wells across the map now feature an NPC vendor operating in non-safe zones who sells randomized seeds, farming equipment, and teas on a timer. These vendors can be killed, though they respawn without refreshing their stock or loot. Wells also contain new food caches and automatically stocked high-gene planters. A brand-new tactical element, Radioactive Water, can now be harvested from two specific locations inside the Radtown monument using any standard water container. Splashing this water onto enemy plants instantly kills them, while throwing it onto players or deploying it via sprinklers irradiates targets. Carrying large quantities of radioactive water or looting a dead player holding it will also irradiate your own character.

Quality of Life and Map Maker Notes

Wallpapers can now be placed on the hardside of building blocks, provided they are located inside a base; exposed exterior wallpapers decay by the next tick. Spray cans now retain shipping container colors through player deaths and server restarts, and repair benches now display graphical icons alongside text for repair costs. Underwater visibility has been increased for better long-distance sightlines. Map makers must update their custom maps to use the new rock assets before next month, as old assets will be removed to free up memory. Charitable Rust 2024 Twitch drops run from October 12 to October 19, supporting Direct Relief.

Why this patch matters

World Update 2.0 meaningfully alters Rust's physical landscape, changing how players navigate cliffs, build around new water biomes, and handle base defense with radioactive liquids.
