Hunger Update Refines Extraction Timers, Deadsmoke, and Vaulting

Good Fun Corp has rolled out a major development update for Hunger detailing changes to extraction timers, contested Deadsmoke triggers, combat balance, and quality-of-life additions ahead of Early Access.

Extraction mechanics and combat readability take center stage in the latest development update for Hunger. Good Fun Corp outlines extensive changes designed to make leaving an Expedition feel more deliberate while addressing pain points identified during Tech Test 3.

Extraction Flow and Countback Timers

Entering an active Extraction Zone starts a 30-second timer. Once completed, players must reach the extraction balloon and interact with it to leave the map. Leaving the extraction radius no longer instantly resets progress. Instead, the timer counts backward when a player steps outside the zone, allowing temporary repositioning during fights without immediately losing progress. For parties, the first member to enter starts the timer, and subsequent members inherit progress. Every player must still individually interact with the balloon to extract.

Contested Extraction Deadsmoke

Deadsmoke behavior has been reworked following player feedback. The visual smoke activates only when two or more separate parties occupy the Extraction Zone, and the detection range has been increased. Solo players or single-party extractions will no longer trigger the smoke, making Deadsmoke an indicator of active contests rather than an ambiguous hazard tied to the original extracting group.

Balloons and Expedition Timing

Extraction balloons descend visibly from the distance across 10 potential landing sites per region, signaling convergence points for players. Extractions open progressively, capped by a 10-minute final countdown broadcast by Reynauld. Certain Masteries also unlock hidden extraction points invisible to other players, offering alternative routes off the map.

Combat Balance and Vault Indicators

Melee weapon damage has been rebalanced to reduce one-shot kill frequency and let fights develop longer. The parry system has been expanded, and weapon animations undergo cleanup to improve combat readability. Additionally, a vault indicator icon has been added to the HUD to clarify when an object is vaultable, preventing accidental stamina loss from failed vaults.

Why this patch matters

These changes remove ambiguity surrounding extraction and movement, giving players clearer information during firefights while preserving high-lethal stakes.
